Description

A pair of 18th century Irish silver twin-handled presentation cups, circa 1776, each with baluster body to a circular footed base and foliate capped scroll handles, with presentation engraving to one side and crest and motto within floral festoon to the other. Hallmarked Matthew West, Dublin, with a further maker's mark R.T, no date letter visible. Height to handle 6 (15.2cm), weight 27.82 ozt (865.4 grams).
Engraving reads, 'Presented by the Select Annuity Company to their Worthy Member William Osbrey, Marshal of the City of Dublin, in Acknowledgment of his Ingenuity in Devising, Prudence in Proposing & Diligence in Promoting their New Charter-Party. Dated the first Day of February M,DCC,LXXVI.' Both displaying general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with their age and use. Both also quite heavily tarnished and would benefit from a clean and polish. Both appear with some likely repairs, mainly around the handle joins. Damage appears more significant to one cup, as there is a repaired rim split/crack in the same area as the join of the handle. On the other side, there is an area of a much lighter tone to one side of the lower join of the handle so further likely repairs in this area. This cup also appears a little squashed so that the rim is not quite circular. Both with a very slight wobble. Some floods of solder visible to the underside of both. And visible seam lines around the stems. Hallmarks a little rubbed and distorted. Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
