A pair of George III silver sauce tureens, each of oval pedestal form with twin reeded loop handles and beaded borders, engraved to the front with a crested shield depicting two unicorns and within an oval surround of trailing bluebell motifs, each also with a removable domed lid having a similar unicorn crest but appear unmarked. Tureens hallmarked Robert Hennell I, London 1782. Length including handles 9.5 (24cm), gross weight including lids 31.82 ozt (990 grams). Both tureens displaying general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing consistent with age and use. Many surface nicks and pitting marks are visible, especially to the interiors and one example appears more heavily marked. This example also with a slight impression from the pedestal base. A few minor surface dints or bruises to both. Both appear with slightly misshapen rims. Some repairs to both, mainly around rims and handle joins. Some further rim splits/cracks also visible. Both hallmarked to the underside of each foot and these are in good order with only light rubbing. The lids display several dints and knocks around the edges and one example with slight impression from finial visible to the interior. They do not fit particularly well to the bases with many gaps seen but this may be because the rims of the tureens are also slightly misshapenBoth lids appear unmarked. However they test around 93% Ag. Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of silver unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
