A fine pair of early George II silver sauce boats, each of circular form with scallop detail to rim and tongue capped double scroll handle, with engraved armorials to one side and raised on a circular spread foot engraved beneath, 'The Gift of Joseph Chaplin Hankey Esq. 1770'. Hallmarked Robert Lucas, London 1734. Length including handle 7.25 (18.5cm), weight 23.77 ozt (739.3 grams). Of heavy gauge and both appear in good overall condition. Displaying some tarnishing and expected surface wear, marks and scratches consistent with the age and use. Little surface nicks or gouges and pitting marks are visible throughout, including around rims and edges. And particularly to bases of the interiors, which also display some heavier scratched marks. Minor surface cracks visible at joins of handle to rim.Floods of solder visible to underside, around the inner rims, more so on one foot.Armorials still appear fairly bright, each depicts a two rampant lions facing left, one with crown and the other without and each in an oval cartouche.Hallmarks located to base, these with some rubbing and distortion but still legible.
