Description

An early 18th century Irish silver twin-handled cup and cover, of typical form with engraved armorial depicting three leopard heads within an oval and foliate scroll surround and surmounted with a helmet in profile and forearm holding aloft a dagger, all above a central girdle and raised on a spread circular foot, with tongue capped double scroll handles and a removable domed cover with repeated raised arm and dagger crest. Hallmarked Dublin, probably 1715, maker's mark partly rubbed but attributed to Edward Workman, cover also marked with the Harp Crowned and date letter. Height including cover 11 (28cm), weight 41.04 ozt (1276.5 grams). Displaying some expected surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing consistent with the age and use. Many surface dints, bumps and bruises throughout. Some more notable knocks and dints around the rounded edge of lid and including the inner rim. Finial is slightly compressed in to the top of the lid. Some heavy scratched marks and surface nicks to interior with slight impressions from handles and girdle. Interior fairly dull in appearance. Interior of lid and the underside of foot with heavier staining/tarnishing. Engraved armorial and crest with some light surface wear and rubbing but overall still bright.Lid appears to be quite a tight fit. Hallmarks located to underside of base, in the centre. Also with scratch weight 41-82. Hallmarks to lid located to interior. Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
