A mid-Victorian silver nutmeg grater, of oval form with hinge opening base and engine-turned decoration throughout, the pull-off lid further engraved with a central cartouche of a Greek cross motif above initials and within foliate surround, and opening to reveal a fixed metal grater. Hallmarked Birmingham 1861, maker probably Henry Hyde Aston. Length 3.5cm, gross weight 16 grams. Displaying some general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing but otherwise appears in good overall condition. The hinged cover has a couple of very slight dints, seen from both sides. Appears in good working order, closes well but rises very slightly. One of the hinge pins can be seen more prominently.Pull-off lid is a very good secure fit. Some light surface rubbing to decoration but overall in good order and still fairly crisp and bright.Metal grater displaying some rust and distortion around the holes. Hallmarked to reverse of hinged base and also to reverse of pull-off lid with a further lion passant to the main body, these all clearly legible. Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
