A George III silver snuff box, of plain oblong form with reeded border detail, the hinged lid having a raised oval panel within engraved floral scroll surround and opening to a silver-gilt interior, the panel later decorated with an insignia for The Lancashire Fusiliers with a further associated presentation inscription around the sides. Engraving reads, 'A token to James Hayward Mackay President Clan Mackay Society 1907 From Captain C.H. Unwin. (XX Regt. Lancs Fusiliers)' Further engraved to the other side, 'good man, good deeds form whence spring such god knows, but seeing, he rewardeth much.'Appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some expected surface wear, marks scratches and tarnishing in keeping with the age and use. Some heavier wear around edges including a couple of possible repairs around joins, mainly to the lid when viewed to the interior. Some heavier scuffs around base rim.Hinged lid appears in good working order. It closes securely but not completely flush, rising slightly mainly at the front. Gilding to interior very bright. The surface to reverse of oval panel appears a little uneven with minor bumps.Hallmarked to interior base with repeated maker's mark and lion passant to lid and a further lion passant to exterior of box. Heavily rubbed in places but all still legible.Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
