A pair of George II cast silver candlesticks by John Cafe, each on shaped square base with shell motif corner detail and rising to a knopped stem, further shell shoulders and a spool-shaped socket, with removable nozzles conforming in design. Hallmarked London 1753, nozzles not marked. Height without nozzle 7.75 (19.7cm), gross weight 31.38 ozt (975.7 grams). Both appear with heavy tarnishing and would benefit from a clean and polish. Also displaying some general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with the age and use. Also surface pitting to some areas. Seam lines visible to both. One example with some cracks visible beneath the lower knop, possible repairs This same candlestick has some patches of a different tone around the socket, which do not appear to polish out, and the surface is quite uneven in appearance. However it is marked with a lion passant. The socket on the other candlestick is not marked. Both with a slight wobble. Hallmarks to both located on the underside, in each corner. One also with crudely engraved initials. The nozzles appear unmarked. One nozzle appears to fit both candlesticks quite well but the other nozzle is not a good fit to either candlestick. When tested, the results range from 93% to 95% Ag. Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of silver unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
