Description

A pair of George II cast silver candlesticks by John Cafe, each on hexafoil base with shell motif detail and rising to a knopped stem, shell shoulders and spool-shaped socket, with removable nozzles conforming in design, engraved armorial to the base and further crest with motto to each nozzle. Hallmarked London 1751, nozzles not marked. Maximum height 8.5 (21.5cm), gross weight 36.89 ozt (1147.5 grams). Both candlesticks displaying general expected surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Minor surface nicks, pitting marks and dints. Some little knocks around edges and and also rims of sockets.Seam lines visible to both. The stem of one candlestick appears to have a very slight lean.Hallmarks located to the underside and these all legible. Nozzles with some heavier surface marks, nicks and scratches. Cylindrical sections squashed and dinted around the edges. Crest motto reads 'Je Avance' Nozzles appear to be a fairly good fit but are not marked. When tested the results vary from around 93% to 95%. Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of silver unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
