Description

A set of four George IV Irish silver open salts, each of cauldron form with shaped gadroon rim and ornately decorated with chinoiserie and other motifs surrounding a scrolled cartouche, and each raised on three scrolled legs to trefoil feet with a male mask surmount with wide brimmed tall hat and handlebar moustache, hallmarked James Fray, Dublin 1824 and further marked WEST; matched with a set of four silver salt spoons of asymmetrical foliate design, hallmarked Joseph Craddock & William Ker Reid, London 1822. Height of salts 2.25 (5.5cm), length of spoons 4.5 (11.5cm), total weight 25.64 ozt (797.3 grams). All pieces displaying some tarnishing and expected surface wear, marks and scratches in commensurate with their age and use. Set of four salts with some small surface bruises and minor dints. Some significant surface rubbing and wear to the decoration causing flattening and loss of detail or definition to some areas. Only traces remain of engraved crests to the cartouches. Interiors with faded gilding, some heavier scratches, pitting and contact marks and also some slight impressions from feet. All standing firm on their feet, however there do appear to be some cracks and repairs to the scrolled legs. One salt appears slightly shorter than the other three. Hallmarks located to the underside of each, these partly worn and rubbed but mostly legible. The four spoons with traces of gilding so likely once gilded throughout. Some verdigris visible. All with some damage and repairs around various sections of the stems. It appears that the upper section of the stem on one of the spoons is the wrong way round as the 'reverse' matches the front of the other three. However the maker's mark is struck on this 'reverse' side. Main hallmarks located to the bowls with maker's mark struck to foliage of upper stem, these partly worn and rubbed but mostly legible. Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
