Andalusian school of the 17th century. "Virgin". Polychrome wood carving. It presents some faults in the wood and the polychromy, but it is in a good general state of conservation. Measurements: 90 x 47 x 30 cm. Baroque carving in round bulk. Virgin of Andalusian school, represented with attributes of the Immaculate, resting her feet on clouds surrounded by seraphs. Her mantle undulates due to the effect of the heavenly breeze. This movement of the cloth gives the carving a typically Baroque dynamic image. The flounce of the cloak, the movement of which imprints successful diagonal folds around the figure, harmonises with the curling tresses that cascade down the back of the figure. In contrast to this, the canon of the Virgin remains frontal, with vertical folds draping her tunic naturally, managing to imprint the right textures and qualities on the material. This is a language typical of 17th-century Andalusian carving, in a certain classicist tradition, which coexists with baroque novelties. The Virgin joins her hands in prayer at chest level and the expression on her face conveys a sense of rapture and devotion.
