Spanish school, 17th century. "Virgin Assumption. Oil on panel. It has repainting and restorations. Frame of the XVIIIth century with faults. Measurements: 56 x 39 cm; 65 x 49 cm (frame). Devotional painting of baroque period, with representation of a saint with the arms crossed on the chest and escaping her look towards the sky. She is thus shown in deep rapture before the heavenly revelation. This is a moment (that of the ecstasy of the devotee) frequently depicted in Baroque painting, which gives pathos a predominant role. However, the young woman`s features are here serene and harmonious. The full, red lips, half-opened in surprise, give great sensuality to the face, boldly modelled by the light. The blue of the iris shimmers under the arch of the eyebrows. The red tunic is folded in naturalistic draperies, as is the veil, which is given a satiny quality, absorbing the soft contrasts of light. Because of these characteristics, the iconography of this work can be related to the Assumption.
