从文字及实物记载可知，早于千年前，古人已把透明水晶或宝石磨成透镜，从而放大影像。发展至明代，放大镜已然不再为一片简单之透镜，其装饰制作工艺已经相当精致，此件铜鎏金寿字花卉纹镶白玉龙钩柄放大镜便是其中例证。 拍品凸透的镜面包镶铜质鎏金镜框，并錾刻花卉纹，颈、柄连接处饰团寿纹及篆书寿字，上下衬以展翅的彩蝶、柔媚的花枝，生机盎然。镜柄以光泽柔润，状如凝脂的白玉为材，雕作三弯式“带钩”镶饰，龙首为钩，蚕眉环眼，阔鼻方吻，双角后倚，粗壮有力；钩身镂雕幼龙，身躯柔韧曲折，四足撑地，花尾翻卷，形成一幅教子的温馨场景。 整器制作精美，装饰工艺精湛，集合明清时期常见的玉雕、鎏金、錾刻、镶嵌等多种工艺于一身，雕工娴熟、鎏金灿烂、镶嵌牢固、白玉凝润，富有实用价值的同时，亦是一件独具一格的收藏佳品。
