Yoshu Chikanobu (Hashimoto Chikanobu, 1838-1912), Kagami Mochi, from the series Chiyoda No Ooku (The Inner Chiyoda Palace), Meiji period (1868-1912), dated twenty-eighth year of Meiji (1895), an oban triptych of woodblock prints of court ladies watching a procession pulling a giant rice cake for the New Year celebration, their kimonos decorated with the karazuri embossing technique on the collar, signed Yoshu Chikanobu, published by Fukuda Hatsujiro, 35.6 x 72cm, framed and glazed Chiyoda no ooku (The Inner Chiyoda Palace) depicting the hidden world of the shogun's princess and other women serving him in Edo Castle, engaged in a variety of activities and rituals during a full year.
