Spanish School, 19th century Portrait of a Naval Officer, three-quarter length, in uniform indistinctly signed 'Jose Sa...' l.r., oil on canvas, oval 83 x 63cm Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined onto a coarse weave canvas support. The canvas texture is evident in the paint layer, exacerbated by lining. An old damage in the sitter’s face has been repaired through lining. Overpaint is present around the lower edge of the painting and in the sitter’s face and hair as well as scattered across the background. The overpaint has darkened and is very glossy. There is mould forming on the surface of the painting around the edges. The varnish is clear but slightly uneven with a light layer of surface dirt.
