The canvas is in plane and the paint layer is stable. In the sky there are small losses following the canvas texture where the paint has abraded. There is a network of age cracks across the paint surface. There is a thick varnish layer and some cleaning tests have been carried out to remove this in the area of the sitter’s face and left hand. The varnish is yellowed and glossy. There are a few localised areas of overpaint.
