French School, 17th century Portrait of a Franciscan monk, head and shoulders oil on canvas 44 x 33cm Condition report: Oil on a coarse weave canvas support which has been lined onto a finer canvas. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor deformations across the surface. The texture of the coarse weave canvas is evident in the paint layer. There is extensive wear and abrasion across the surface with small scattered losses, mainly located around the edges. There are localised areas of retouching covering some cracks and losses. The surface of the painting is very matte, it is unclear if there is a varnish layer present.
