36 x 18 cm.
Florentine workshop of the 16th century. Reliquary in the form of a tabernacle frame with Christ crucified. Ebony wood, bone and onyx appliqués. Reliquaries of Saint Andrew and Saint Stephen. Measurements: 36 x 18 cm. For centuries the cult and veneration of the mortal remains and objects that belonged to or were related to holy figures or Jesus himself. This devotional activity has its precedents in Judaism and Hellenistic culture, who used these objects as consecrated elements of worship and even as objects used to awaken the spirituality of the faithful. With the desire to obtain and preserve these elements, objects used to deposit and protect these relics began to proliferate. They usually take the form of boxes, cases, crosses or chests, although they also used to be pendants or necklaces to be worn close to the chest and heart of the wearer. In our case, the reliquary has taken the form of a frame in whose mouldings there are niches containing fragments of up to six relics (bone fragments) of the saints Saint Andrew and Saint Stephen. Completing this tabernacle frame, typical of the Renaissance taking architectural form, an onyx plaque holds a bronze sculpture of a three-nailed Christ.
