Spanish school; 18th century. "The Circumcision of Christ" and "Jesus among the Doctors". Oil on canvas. Re-tinted. With repainting and restorations. They have a 19th century frame. Measurements: 29,5 cm (x2); 38,5 cm (frames, x2). Set of scenes of devotional scenes that present two moments of the infancy of Jesus. The size of both pieces, oval and small in format, together with the subject matter of the two paintings, indicates that they were probably images intended for private devotion. One of them depicts the infant Jesus among the doctors, based on a passage from the Gospel of Luke, which relates the presence of the young Jesus among the theologians or doctors of the Mosaic Law. The text narrates that Jesus, being twelve years old, was lost in Jerusalem, where he had gone with his parents on the occasion of the Jewish Passover. The episode of the circumcision is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The Evangelist narrates this passage (2:21), which will become a common iconographic theme in the Christian tradition, and which precedes the Presentation of the Child in the Temple. Art uses the information provided by the Apocryphal Gospels (mainly Pseudo-Matthew and the Arabic Gospel of the Infancy) to add details to the theme, which has been depicted in painting since the end of the 10th century, usually as part of the Cycle of Mary or of Christ.
