Baluch carpet. Pakistan, 19th century. Hand knotted wool. Fringe losses. Wear due to use and passage of time. Size: 165 x 88 cm. Small Pakistani Baluch rug from the end of the 19th century with a beautiful design of geometrical and tribal shapes in beautiful natural red, blue and brown colours, totally hand knotted on a woollen base. Baluch rugs (also called Baluch or Beluchi rugs) are handmade rugs originally made by the Baluch nomads, who live near the border between Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. These nomads also exist on a smaller scale in Bahrain and in the Punjab province of India. About 70% live in Pakistan and are divided into two groups: Sulaimani and Makrani. The rugs are often small with bright patterns. Prayer rugs are common. The dominant colours are red, brown and dark blue.
