端溪佳材雕就，形制规矩，砚面起棱，浅开砚堂，斜通式墨池，砚背平整，光素无饰。
端砚自唐朝初年开始出产，在唐代初期广东省肇庆（古称端州）东郊羚羊峡栏柯山的端溪一带，丛山峻岭，气势磅礴，重岩叠嶂，生产的砚石即端砚，深受文人墨客的喜爱，并得到达官贵人和帝王将相的赏识。
当时的端砚是文人墨客书写的实用工具，石面上无任何图案花纹装饰，唐朝李肇的《唐国史补》云：“内邱瓷瓯，端州紫石砚，天下无贵贱通用之”。
