In this canvas, the painter has taken the model of a female portrait made by Jaques-Louis David around 1780, a girl with a turban that in the original painting appears alone. In the present painting, the same woman is accompanied by a child, whose head rests on her chest. In this homage to the neoclassical painter, the classicist work is respected, as can be seen in the palette of nuanced tones and the emphasis on drawing, skillfully balancing line and color. The dark eyes of the original work are here of an intense blue. The sitter conveys a serene beauty, worthy of a goddess or muse of Greek statuary, which inspired the neoclassical painters. But, at the same time, the psychological charge embodied in the dazed expression marks the distancing from the ancient models. Dimensions 54 x 44 cm; 69 x 59,5 cm.
