It was said the two met in Jiangxi Province when Zhao Zhiqian served as an official there. There are other calligraphic and painting works that were dedicated to Meipu, including a large and impressive painting of an ink pine in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing (www.dpm.org.cn/collection/paint/231473.html). There are also letters exchanged between Meipu and Zhao Zhiqian, such as a group of letters sold at China Guardian, Beijing, 23 November 2010, lot 4329. All these works suggest a close relationship between the artist and Shu Meipu. The peach is a symbol of longevity and prosperity. The painting would have been an appropriate birthday gift from the artist to Shu Meipu.
