玉砚于明清时期最为盛行，是文人舒展笔墨的心石。在形色各异的砚台中，玉砚产生最早，远在上古时代就有皇帝“治玉为砚”的记载。《西京杂记》中曰：“天子以玉为砚取其不冰”。此砚以璧为材，玉质细腻温润，光气十足，包浆浑厚，通体光洁匀净。砚台呈长方形，砚腹掏膛精细，打磨精良，滑润匀金黄，为舔笔用，以玉为砚，生墨有趣。作为文房四宝之一的砚台，发展到了宋代，最具时代特征的形制当为抄手砚了，它是从唐代的箕形砚演变而来的。在称谓上也有将它称为插手砚、手抄砚或者是大史砚的。整体造型规矩严谨，风格高雅大方，是中国书法的必备用具，十分适合收藏或馈赠佳礼。
