A Chinese lacquered games box, 19th century, of rectangular form, painted in gilt with a monogram surrounded by leaves and foliage in an oval cartouche, against a diapered ground, the interior with seven lidded compartments, five covers painted with ace, king, queen, jack and nine of diamonds, and the other two with foliage, overall 32.6 x 28.5cm The 'picture' card boxes are indicative of the popular parlour game 'Pope Joan'. Condition report: Lacquer with cracks and scratches. Chips to edges. Gilt rubbed. Signs of repaint, possible restoration to corners. Some boxes with splits to corners. All boxes warped.
