A Japanese box and cover, Meiji period (1868-1912), decorated in the Shibayama style, with quail and chrysanthemum under a blossoming tree, with stained ivory and mother-of-pearl against a ground in ivory simulating a parquetry wicker effect, the sides inlaid with butterflies and other insects on a black-lacquered ground, the edges covered with ivory simulating bamboo, 30.5cm wide 21.2cm deep 14.8cm high (2) Condition report: Bamboo-shaped fittings to the edges and with splits and cracks, loose. One corner with fitting missing. Signs of glue. Some inlaid missing or glued. Surface scratches and cracks. Liner stained. Black ground with cracks and knocks, signs of repaint. The cover wabbly and does not fit properly to the box.
