A matched set of six yew and elm low hoop back Windsor armchairs, mid-late 19th century, North East Midlands, each with a pierced splat and triple ring turned supports, united by a crinoline stretcher, 48cm wide approximately 48cm deep 90cm high (6) For similar examples, see Bernard D Cotton, 'The English Regional Chair', pp.114-126. Condition report: Split to one hoop back. One stick split on the same chair. Further splits to hoops, stretchers and splats. Scratches and wear to seats. One stretcher with a partial beech replacement, but is very well executed. Evidence of minor old repairs as expected. One other hoop split to the back. All stand a little unevenly but generally solid and with nice patination. General wear commensurate with age and use.
