Scottish School, mid-19th century Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter length, in a dark coat and seated in an armchair, holding a silver box indistinctly inscribed on (torn) label verso, oil on board 43 x 35cm Condition report: Oil on artist’s board with a stamp for artists’ supplier Roberson & Company on the reverse. A damage to the board has been repaired from the reverse with a patch of thick cardboard. Other wise the support is in a good condition. The paint layers are stable. There is extensive overpaint, notably in the sitter’s face. The damage has been filled and retouched. Overall the overpaint is reasonably well matched to the original but has become matte in areas. Glossy brushstrokes across the surface appear to be an attempt to saturate the matte retouchings with varnish. The varnish layer itself is matte and slightly yellowed but acceptable.
