Description

Ernst Fries View of Ariccia oil on paper, laid down on cardboard.. 22 x 28.5 cm. Provenance German collection. This work, while unfortunately unsigned, nevertheless represents a characteristic oil study by Ernst Fries. It was probably painted in the summer of 1824 when the young artist from Heidelberg went hiking in the Alban Mountains together with Ludwig Richter, the Rist brothers, Carl Götzloff and Oehme. In late July he continued on to Ariccia with just one of the Rist brothers and they remained there until the end of August. Although Fries suffered from attacks of fever and fatigue during this time, he was still able to carry out several watercolours and drawings. Like many of his contemporaries, Fries was captivated by the Romantic beauty of the overgrown park of the Villa Chigi, which can be seen in this work on a hill in the upper left. Goethe wrote wistfully of this “wilderness” in his “Italian Journey”, and Ludwig Richter described the park in his memoirs as a “forest of magic and fairy tales”. A further depiction of the Villa Chigi by Ernst Fries can be found in a watercolour by the artist in the Albertina in Vienna. However, unlike the present work, the viewpoint in the Vienna piece has been chosen so that the church of Santa Maria Assunta, erected by the Chigi family after designs by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 1660s, is not visible (cf. Wechssler: Ernst Fries 1801-1833. Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Heidelberg 2000, illus. p. 64). Ernst Fries Ansicht von Ariccia Öl auf Papier, auf Karton aufgezogen. 22 x 28,5 cm. Provenienz Deutsche Sammlung. S. 64).
