THE WISE. GIL BLAS DE SANTILLANE'S STORY. Paris, Paulin, 1835. Large in-8, fawn half-maroquin with wedges, very ornate ribbed back, cover and back (V. Champs). The first print of this edition, which is of capital importance for the history of woodcutting in the Romantic period. It is decorated with a frontispiece, a woodcut portrait of Gil-Blas printed on China, and numerous wood vignettes in the text by Jean Gigoux. Very nice copy, free of stitches and nicely bound by Champs. From the Chandon de Briailles library (ex-libris). (Carteret III, 382).
