ALCIAT (A). EMBLEMATA. Lyon, G. Rouille, 1548. In-8 of 164-[4] pages, half red calf, spine ribbed and decorated (19th century binding). Famous collection of illustrated quatrains which became extraordinarily popular in the 16th century and from which the artists of the time came to draw allegorical interpretations of symbols. These 129 emblems, attributed to the Little Bernard, are large in size (65 x 60 mm) and are presented in beautiful and large frames. They appear here for the first time and are due to the Lyon artist Pierre Vase. Sheet i is from another edition, with the bottom of the title stripped off with no missing parts. Handwritten ex-libris dated 1830, Felix Van Hulst. (Harness XI, 144) (Praz, 250).
