A GILT-DECORATED SOAPSTONE INK AND BRUSH REST18th/19th centuryOf rectangular form supported on geometric scrolls, carved with three grooves on the top for brushes, delicately decorated in gilt with florets amidst scrolling tendrils, the underside inscribed in gilt with five characters and two seals, box.9.7cm (3 3/4in) long (2).Provenance: 十八/十九世紀 壽山石描金墨床款:臣董誥敬製鈴印:「臣」、「誥」Provenance:Acquired in 2007來源:入藏於2007年The inscription reads 'chen Dong Gao jing zhi' 臣董誥敬製, which may be translated as 'dedicated by official Dong Gao'. The seals read 'chen' 臣 and 'Gao' 誥.Dong Gao (1740–1818), a poet and calligrapher, and son of the famous court painter, Dong Bangda (1699–1769). He took his jinshi degree in 1763, was a noted and high-ranking government official, who served Emperors Qianlong and Jiaqing for more than four decades.
