It follows related 'chun' lacquer boxes and covers first produced during the Jiajing period; see for example from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated inTheplete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, pl.134.A similar box with a gilt Qianlong six-character mark but a red lacquered interior in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated inZhongguo Meishu Quanji: Lacquer, Beijing, vol.8, 1989, pl.172.
