Ca. 400 BC. A beautifully shaped kalathos characterized by a concave ringed base, a truncated cone body, a wide mouth, and a flared rim. The exterior of this kalathos is adorned with horizontal linear decoration in orange and brown pigment, adding to its overall aesthetic appeal. The kalathos was a popular type of vessel in ancient Greece, and it was used for many different purposes. Its primary function was as a basket, used for carrying and storing a variety of items, such as fruit, and flowers. The wide mouth and flared rim made it easy to access the contents of the vessel, while the ringed base ensured that it could be placed securely on a flat surface without tipping over.Size: L:150mm / W:210mm ; 845gProvenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.
