英石之为文人藏赏雅设，自宋代已有记载，宋人赵希鹄于《洞天清禄集》中言：“英州出石如铜矿，声亦如铜，倒悬岩下，以锯取之，故底有锯痕，大者或长七八尺，起峰至二三寸，亦几桉奇玩，然色润者可爱，枯燥者不足贵也。”可知宋人赏英石，已知取形貌奇巧、质色润泽者为上品。此宋人之审美意趣，至明清仍被文人雅士奉为圭臬。
此英石山子形貌奇峻，峰峦隆起，叠嶂交错，观之如临险峰。层岩间亦仿佛交掩临空栈道，仙人石窟。古人观赏案前赏石，常常神游期间，仿佛以芥子入须弥境，观此英石奇峰，可得一二真趣。
