A THANGKA OF VAJRASATTVA AND CONSORTTIBET, 19TH CENTURY Distemper on cloth. Himalayan Art Resources item no. 1432 21 x 33 in. (53.3 x 83.8 cm) 西藏 十九世紀 金剛薩埵唐卡 This thangka's horizontal format followspositionsmonly painted on walls in monastic chapels and was popular within the Gelug order since at least the 18th century. The format was possibly inspired by the imperial Qing workshop, producing examples which are held in the Palace Museum, Beijing (Wang [ed.], Zangchuan Fojiao Tangka , Hong Kong, 2006, pp. 262-285, nos. 240-263). Vajrasattva and his consort in this unionprise a Vajrayana meditational deity used for the purification of sins and defilements in many Tantric cycles. Flanked by equally sized figures of Ekavira Vajrabhairava and Naro Dakini, with a Gelug hierarch and Shakyamuni above, and Chitipati with Yama Dharmaraja and offerings below.
