Description Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678), Madonna with the child Jesus surrounded by a garland of flowers, oil on copper, 32 x 38,5 cm This marvellous painting on copper was painted by Jan Brueghel, the younger regarding the garland of flowers and an anonymous Flemish master regarding the octagonal medallion.This work can be classified as a direct sequel to Jan Brueghel I (Velvet Brueghel). His eldest son, Jean Brueghel II, a skilled copyist, did not limit himself to imitating his father. He realized personal and individualized creations in the field of flower painting onwards 1640. Many criteria make it possible to attribute this work to the master: the neatness of the shapes, tone of the cloris and quality of the craftsmanship cast in a smooth brushstroke. The chromatic range is similar to a 'Garland with the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine' by the same artist, kept in a private collection in Marseille. As for the Madonna in the centre of the octagonal medallion, due to an anonymous Flemish master, it is inspired by the famous 'Madonna Della Cesta' of the Italian High Renaissance painter Antonio da Corregio (National Gallery London). While in this work of Correggio, the Virgin and Child appear in an architectural background where Saint Joseph the carpenter can be seen, Jan Brueghel stands out from its model and features a distant Italianate landscape and omits the basket at the feet of the Madonna.
