古往今来文人墨客，极为重视使用审美于一体的文房用具，文房用具除基本的笔、墨、纸、砚文房四宝外，还派生出来许多，诸如印章、印盒、水盂、笔洗、笔筒、镇尺、砚屏、墨盒等等。宋人赵希鹄在《沿天清录集》中注：“晨起则磨墨，汁盈砚池，以供一日之用，墨尽复磨，故有水盂。”可知水盂为盛磨墨用水的盛水器，以玉、瓷、铜等常见。
拍品由整块南红玛瑙雕刻而成，质地糯透温润，红白相间，掏膛匀净。采用高浮雕、浅刻等技法，以荷花之天然形态入饰，凿大片荷叶成水盂主体，有盛开的荷花相伴一侧，螭龙攀爬其上，祥瑞之至。整器将巧思、雕工之妙与玛瑙之美结合的淋漓尽致，当为文房雅玩之佳器。
附木质透雕荷花纹器座，包浆莹润，雕工精绝，与主体水丞相得益彰。
