In addition to his published contributions on Tang, Song and Yuan dynasty painting, his research into Naxi culture and language is considered seminal. For his own painting, Li Lin-Tsan studied art with Lin Fengmian (1900-1991) and Li Kuchan (1899-1983) at the Hangzhou National Academy of Art in the 1930's.
