Quamrul Hassan (Bangladeshi, 1921-1988) WomanQuamrul Hassan (Bangladeshi, 1921-1988)Woman signed 'Quamrul' and dated 1981 upper leftwatercolour on paper, framed51 x 36cm (20 1/16 x 14 3/16in).ProvenanceThe Artist's Family Collection.ExhibitedExhibited in the National Museum of Bangladesh in 2012.Women have featured heavily in Potuas works throughout his career, and they started featuring more heavily in his works from the 1950s. Unlike Picasso's women which appear as physical beings, sensuous and with an innate attraction and attachment for the artist, Potuas women are not about intimacy, but rather about distant attraction. He portrays his women, as in in the present lot with a softness and tenderness, albeit with elements of the cubist style as seen in the treatment of the face and body. Whilst his women in the 50s and 60s were largely based on the mother, the housewife and then through the eyes of familial life, when he started his own family, the work in this lot comes from 1981, five years after the demise of his marriage. The end of his marriage did not have a detrimental effect on his output. He remained creative throughout the last years of his life, and focussed on the external beauty of women, which was in contrast to his earlier works, which centered on their inner beauty.
