Bronze with Silver and Stones China / Tibet , 16th century Dimensions: Height 11 cm Wide 6 cm Depth 5 cm Weight: 272 grams Hajagriva is one of the many Tibetan Dharmapalas, wrathful gods. Hajagriva can be translated as "The horse-necked one" which explains the horse head above his head encircled by an elaborate skull crown. This wrathful emanation of Avalokiteshvara is kneeling on one knee and holding his hands in front of the chest. One hand is holding a ritual staff called khatvanga, the other is facing the palm upwards to the sky. The big belly is ornamented with necklaces, a short dhoti covering his lower body. The face is lifted upwards with a fierce expression. A scowling face with wide-open mouth exposing the fangs, a broad nose and bulging eyes show this deity's determination to help humans ovee egotism and ignorance.
