23 x 16 x 18 cm.
Florentine Renaissance workshop linked to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure. 16th-17th century. Chest with domed lid. Made of ebony with gilded bronze finish and a hard stone on the lid. Measurements: 23 x 16 x 18 cm. Rectangular chest with a domed lid that opens vertically with a stop. It has two handles on the sides, an iron lock and is completed with gilt-bronze reliefs used to protect and ornament the piece. At each corner there are scrolls topped with little love handles that, in turn, support nymphs and satyrs at each end. The finishing touches that decorate the piece are vegetation, scrolls and filigree motifs. This is undoubtedly a piece of great elegance and simplicity related to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, one of the ancient artisan and artistic workshops of the Duchy of Florence at the behest of Duke Ferdinand I de Medici, and conceived as a centre specialising in inlay work with hard stones. This type of object was created to protect precious objects or to house documents and items that sometimes had to accompany the owner on long journeys, and for this reason it has handles on its sides, making it easier to carry.
