FINE INLAID IRON CABINET MODELLED AS A SHRINE BY THE KOMAI COMPANY OF KYOTO, MEIJI PERIOD 明治 日本國京都住駒井製款 金工樓閣寶塔置物 constructed in two removeable storeys raised on a stepped square base supported on four bracket feet, each storey constructed beneath a typically sloping roof fitted with hinged doors and drawers, both upper and lower roof decorated respectively with cranes, magpies, phoenix and peacocks in rural settings or seasonal flowers, surmounted by a tall stupa with a knop in the form of a flaming pearl, the roof's corners further adorned with suspending bells, the base signed Nihon Koku Kyoto ju Komai sei, with a fitted and stepped wooden stand (20cm high; 1185g) Qty: (1) Provenance: Private Scottish collection, Perthshire Note: a comparable hexagonal facetted cabinet modelled as a shrine with the same Komai mark, was offered at Bonhams London, 11 May 2010, lot 475; the other cabinet attributed to the Komai company, similar in the form and decoration, was sold at Bonhams London, 7 Nov 2019, lot 211; a further comparable example was sold at Sotheby's London, 16 May 2007, lot 945.
