The roses are mostly the earlier multi-petalled versions and from this Barrington Haynes supposed the glasses featuring empty buds might pre-date 1745. He was unable to propose an explanation for the Empty Bud, except to say that it was clearly intended and must have had a hidden meaning. An identical example is in the collection of the National Museums of Scotland, (A.1955.47) Geoffrey Seddon in his 1995 book referred to Churchill's Glass Notes but he also did not offer an explanation. He did, however, increase the number of known examples to ten.
