A RARE BLANC DE-CHINE DOCUMENTARY SEALCyclically dated to the Jiyou year, corresponding to 1684 and of the period The square seal surmounted by a fierce lu duan , its horn extending down its back, with finely incised mane and tail, with flaring nostrils and bulging eyes, a playful cub by its front left paw. According to Jinjiang Huang Xing Yuanliu (Family Tree of the Huang family from Jinjiang 晉江黃姓源流), Huang achieved the Juren degree during the eighth year of the Shunzhi reign (1651). The calligraphic inscription on the side of the seal notes that it wasmissioned by Huang Xiangyou's great-nephew Huang Ciying, who himself achieved the Juren degree in the Guimao year of the Kangxi reign (1663) and was posted to Taiwan, Fengshan County, not far from Dehua in Fujian Province where the present lot was made. pare with a similar blanc de-Chine seal, Ming dynasty, illustrated in Theplete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Small Refined articles of the Study , Shanghai, 2009, pp.271, no.270; and in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (acc.no.EA1956.3281).
