Spanish school, late 18th century. "Immaculate". Watercolour on parchment. Measurements: 29 x 20.5 cm. Devotional image of the Immaculate representing Mary on a background of golden light, standing and with her hands crossed on her chest, raised on the moon (originally symbol of the chastity of the goddess Diana, assimilated later by the Marian iconography). In this case, she is depicted as a full, humanised moon, with physiognomic features. Cherubs and seraphs surround the moon, and cottony clouds complete the composition, which is set in a frame drawn with plant interlacing. From the type of drawing on parchment, it may have come from a miniature codex, a type of manuscript and illustrated book that was produced in the `scriptorium` or specialised workshops of monasteries by monks of great artistic and doctrinal qualification for the monasteries themselves, churches and kings.
