School of Trapani; 17th century. "Madonna and Child". Polychrome alabaster, gilt and silver. It presents breakage and restorations. Measurements: 59 x 21 x 19 cm. Mary is standing, dressed with a long-sleeved tunic over a shirt that shows through the forearms, and only partially covered by a mantle, which, when falling, creates the usual movement in this type of works, made following a style very inspired in the Italian Baroque. She joins her hands in front of her chest and raises one foot, creating movement with her knee. At her feet, the lunar crescent and a monstrous figure with snake-like features can be seen, details that link her to the iconography of the Virgin of the Apocalypse and, therefore, to that of the Immaculate Conception, typical of Spain. The base has an elaborate composition based on contrasted scrolls, triangles resembling schematic plants, etc., as well as a scallop on the front, organising the composition in a symmetrical manner. Both the lines of this part and those of the carving show the clear relationship with Italian late Baroque models in the present work. Trapani, on the island of Sicily, was an important artistic centre for the production of alabaster devotional figures in the Baroque period, from where they were exported to other parts of Italy and Spain, reproducing these models.
