Italian School of the first half of the 16th century. "Presentation before Caiaphas". Watercolour on parchment. Size: 18 x 12.5 cm (total). The Presentation before Caiaphas takes place in an interior space well constructed from the rational laws of perspective, which simulates a depth where the scene develops. On the right is the throne on which Caiaphas is seated. While the Jewish high priest is tearing his clothes and uncovering his chest full of rage, with his facial features and reaction, the group on the left follow the dynamism and tension of the scene, although Christ is much more static, manacled and with hardly any facial expression, his gaze directed towards the outside of the painting. In addition to the depth achieved and the attitudes of the figures, the work has details of a decorative, even ornate nature that also contrast with the figure of Christ. His poor clothes are nothing like the cloaks and brocades that adorn the soldiers. These works are called codex miniae, which were handwritten and illustrated books produced in the "scriptorium" or specialised workshops of the monasteries by monks with high artistic and doctrinal qualifications for the monasteries themselves, the churches and the kings.
