(12 3⁄8 x 5 7⁄8 in.)NOTE:Xue Erwang, originally named Daguan, was a scholar from Kunming and is remembered for his loyalty to the Ming dynasty. When Qing troops pursued Emperor Yung-Li of the Southern Ming Dynasty in Yunnan, the Emperor retreated to Burma, and Xue Erwang, also his entire family, killed themselves in Heilongtan, Kunming, to display their allegiance. Because of his righteous act, later generations built him a tomb beside the Black Dragon Pool, whose walls are inlaid with 16 pieces of stone inscriptions written by Chen Rongchang, Epitaph of Mr. Xue Erwang. In June 1936, Cheng Kinlo travelled to Yunnan for fieldwork and visited Xue Erwang's memorial temple at the Black Dragon Pool. After reading the epitaph, Cheng respected the morale and attitude of the Xue Family. He recorded the journey in his book A Journey to Yunnan in One Month, published in July of 1937 by the Chung Hwa Bookpany.
