Spanish school of the 19th - 20th century. Following 15th century models."Moses with the tablets of the Commandments".Mixed media on parchment. The paper shows wear due to the passage of time.Measurements: 9 x 9 cm.In the History of Art, the figure of Moses is very frequent and he is generally represented as a prophet with the Tablets of the Law as his main attribute, as we can see in this piece. He is usually depicted as a mature, bearded man, wearing a Hebrew tunic and holding a staff or staff in his hand. The Scriptures tell us that the prophet Moses freed his people from slavery, making them wander through the desert. During the journey in the Sinai Peninsula, rumours arose among Moses' people that it would have been better to remain under the yoke of the Egyptians. Moses then performed countless miracles to ease the hardship of the journey and to show the Israelites that Yahweh was guiding them. Thus, to feed them Yahweh rained down manna from heaven, and to quench their thirst Moses struck a rock with his staff, assuring them that water would come forth. When it was slow to come forth and he struck a second time, Yahweh was angry at his lack of faith and punished him. Ultimately Moses went up to Mount Sinai, where he received the tablets of the law, imposed by God. These tablets contained the commandments. After coming down from the mountain Moses found the people of Israel worshipping the golden calf. The biblical text narrates "God spoke all these words: "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, nor any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing mercy to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments. Yahweh said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'Do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold to set beside me.'"These works are called miniated codices, which were handwritten and illustrated books that were produced in the "Scriptorium" or specialised workshops of the monasteries by monks of great artistic and doctrinal qualification for the monasteries themselves, the churches and the kings.
