Processional cross; Limoges workshops, 12th-13th century.Gilded copper.Measurements: 20 x 18 cm.Processional cross made of gilded copper, with flordelised finials. Both the front and back are engraved with circular motifs, those on the front being smaller than those on the back. This type of piece was used for important liturgical events, such as processions, and was often changed when there were financial means to do so and in line with new fashions. This type of cross finial, known as "flordelisada" because of the finish of the arms, was one of the most common in Spanish silverware of the period and enjoyed a long tradition. Precious metals and materials such as gold, silver, gilded silver, enamel, precious stones, etc. were preferred, but if the parish or ecclesiastical authority could not afford to pay for them, they were made in other more humble but richer-looking materials, such as gilded copper. In this second case, too, the fashions and techniques of silverware were followed, and striking similarities can be found in works made of different materials. The Limoges workshop appeared in the last quarter of the 12th century and continued its activity until the 14th century. It flourished again in the 15th century with the new technique of painted enamel. It became the most important enamel workshop, ahead of the Rhineland and Meuse, which disappeared in the 12th century and were dedicated to the production of individual plates on commission, which were then mounted on an object or joined together to form altar frontals. In Limoges, on the other hand, the production of objects, no longer just plaques, decorated with enamels for religious, but also for secular use, began to take off.
